Podiums

I started out making a podium for the community orchestra in which I play oboe and english horn. Since then they have become a very popular commission! Contact me if you are interested in a beautiful and functional podium for your group, church, or concert venue!
Picture
Podium #12 for Texas A&M at Kingsville! Cherry with a walnut stain (it matches the wood in the hall). No shots in the hall yet as it is being restored after major damage from a pipe break, but hopefully soon!
Picture
The stained cherry has the dark tone but allows the gold chatoyance and a little of the orange tint to show through. There are two parts that are African mahogany - the lower stretcher and the bilk of the top railing. This again references the wood in the hall. You also see the insert that is used when the railing is not.
Picture
Dr. Scott Jones and the podium in their band hall (again, the performance hall is unavailable). Thanks Scott for the commission! Enjoy!
Picture
The Dordt University railing. The grids are cherry. The emblem is white oak, carved, painted, and mounted to a acrylic panel.
Picture
Podium #9 - Commissioned by the Morning Star Lutheran Church in Matthews, NC. White oak, with a cherry and maple cross. Hard to see, but the top rail is curved to match the curve of the sanctuary railing (along with pretty much every other surface in the church!).
Picture
40"x40"x8" and the railing top is 36" above the surface of the frame. The front edge of the frame is curved as well on both the railing and the insert. Thanks Ed for this special commission!
Picture
Podium #11 for Dordt University in Iowa! Stained white oak and cherry (the grids). Thanks Onsby for the commission! This was a fun one!
Picture
The Dordt University podium in its new home. Spectacular venue!
Picture
This is the organ in the hall at Dordt University. Sometimes it is difficult to find a way to tie my design into the venue. This was not one of those times!
Picture
Podium #10! Commissioned by the University of Texas at El Paso (and my first for a Texas college - well, barely...). Cherry, and the black parts of the railing are cherry stained black. Upclose the black parts have an almost antiqued bronze look as some of the cherry sheen comes through. Thanks Andrew for this commission!
Picture
The black carpet and parts of the railing make a stunning contrast with the cherry. Shown here with the insert. The podium is the standard size - 40"x40"x8" with the top of the railing 36" above the frame.
Picture
The UTEP logo (The Miners) is also cherry. Again you can see the stunning effect of the cherry and black contrast.
Picture
Strake Jesuit High School in Houston! Conductor podium and stand in cherry with some maple. 40"x40"x9" and the railing is 36" above the surface. Thanks Ben for the commission!
Picture
Podium commission for the University of California at Irvine! 42"x42"x10" (tall one!) and the top of the rail is 42" above the platform surface. Ash stained with walnut gel stain with a poly topcoat. Thank you Stephen T. for commissioning me to build your podium!
Picture
A shot of the Strake Jesuit podium with the flash so you can see the chatoyance in the cherry.
Picture
The Strake Jesuit podium with the insert for when the railing is not used. It was a little lighter than the outside piecs when this shot was taken as there had been some planing and sanding, but after a few days it had done its cherry thing and caught up.
Picture
The UC-Irvine podium with its 'no railing' insert. Black commercial carpet over an anti fatigue matting.
Picture
Podium commission in cherry for the new Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center at Gonzaga University! Thank you Laura S. and Gonzaga University for allowing me to build a unique piece for your beautiful new venue!
Picture
Custom podium for the Lakeview Orchestra of Chicago. It is a big one - 48" x 48" x 8.5". The top of the railing is 37.5" above the surface. The top railing is brass, and the uprights reflect the stage proscenium. White oak with a maple trim along the inside of the uprights.
Picture
Lakeview Orchestra of Chicago Music Director Gregory Hughes in dress rehearsal before the first concert with their new podium!
Picture
Another shot of the Lakeview podium in performance!
Picture
Conductor's podium for the Houston Sinfonietta. White oak, carpet (with 'anti-fatigue mat' underneath). Ash structure. Shown here at its first concert on 10/9/2016!
Picture
The podium is 40" x 40" and about 5.5" tall. The top of the railing is 36" above the platform.
Picture
White oak with a natural finish. It is very solid and quiet. The matting under the carpet has just enough cushion (I did one with regular carpet padding - way too 'squishy'...).
Picture
Dovetailed corners.
Picture
Dovetailed corners on the box and mitered corners on the top edging.
Picture
The curved stretchers are bent laminations.
Picture
The railing is removable and sits in this slot.
Picture
Four configurations. The lower unit adds 6" to the height, and the stair treads are about 10" wide.
Picture
The top unit by itself is 40"x40"x6.5", and is shown here with the insert when not using the railing. In the back right you can see how the railing fits into the unit.
Picture
The railing top is 36" above the top of the platform. The design reflects several elements in the venue. The carpet, which is from the hall itself, represents water. The design of the railing reflects the acoustic treatment, which is supposed to resemble trees. The faux frame and panel box sides and the more pronounced angles on the box frame are from the proscenium of the stage.
Picture
Dulles HS Orchestra commission. 40"x40" and 9.5" high (a tall one!). Cherry, with the curved stretcher on the rail of maple.
Picture
Custom podium for the Waltrip High School Band. Oil varnish finished white oak, 36"x36"x8".
Picture
Another shot of the Dulles podium with the insert. Thanks Michael I. for the commission! I hope that you enjoy your podium!
Picture
The railing in removable, and there is a 'no railing' insert for regular use in the band hall.
Picture
The 'W' is white oak with a dark oil varnish stain.
Picture
Conductor's Podium for the St. Faustina Catholic Church in Fulshear, TX (West of Houston).
Picture
Ash stained walnut and cherry, with ash structure and black carpet. The stain colors are matched to the colors of the stage and stairs.
Picture
40" x 40" platform, a little over 6" high, with the railing 36" above the platform.
Picture
The platform is carpeted in black indoor/outdoor carpet over an 'anti fatigue mat'.
Picture
Ash stained walnut and cherry.
